Jason Bentley interviews Amon Tobin today (7/27/2011) on MBE. The topic of drum and bass and dubstep come up. Tobin is glad to not have been pigeonholed into drum and bass as others were. He is a fan of more eclectic bass music like Flying Lotus and Eskimo. He considers himself an outsider to dubstep as well.
This is exactly my sentiments on these two genres. They have stagnated. And If you are not already a star you are better off creating your own genre or at least try to do something different in these genres. If you are trying to sound like all other tracks in those genres, it is very hard to stand out. It’s like trying to compete in the pop market but with relatively huge differences potential in the payoff.
